Rules / Divisions

Divisions Overview

We offer multiple divisions to match your skill level and style of play.

Recreational

  • Ideal for new players or those just looking for a relaxed, fun experience

  • Basic understanding of the game (or just learning)

  • Social, low-pressure environment

Intermediate

  • For players with solid fundamentals

  • Mix of fun and competition

  • Structured play with stronger rallies and rule enforcement

  • Great for those with league or tournament experience

Power

  • High-level play for experienced athletes

  • Consistent serving, setting, and hitting expected

  • Best for club, collegiate, or advanced adult players

General League Rules

We follow AVP beach volleyball rules with a few house tweaks:

  • Format: 4v4 play

  • Co-ed teams: Must have 2 males and 2 females (3 & 1 format not allowed)

  • Scoring: Rally scoring to 21 (win by 2), cap at 25

  • Matches: Best of 3 sets

  • Net Rule: No touching the net at any time

  • Serving: Underhand/overhand allowed; jump serves permitted

  • Let Serves: Legal

  • Open Hand Tips: Not allowed in Intermediate or Power divisions (use knuckles, pokes, rolls)

  • Blocks: Block does not count as a touch – 3 touches allowed after a block

  • Hand Sets: Follow beach hand setting rules.

Division-Specific Hand Setting Rules

Rec Division

  • No doubles will be called

  • Can open hand set over and on first touch

Intermediate Division

  • Blatant doubles will be loosely called to maintain flow

  • Sets must be square (forward/backward) or attempt to set a teammate when setting over

  • First-touch open hand sets (like serve receive) more strictly monitored

Power Division

  • Doubles and lifts are strictly enforced

  • Open hand first-touch allowed only if clean (AVP rules)

  • Must be square (forward/backward) or intended for a teammate when setting over

Sportsmanship Policies

  • Start on Time: Arrive early and be warmed up before your match

  • Substitutes: Allowed during the regular season; must be approved for playoffs

  • Good Vibes Only: Unsportsmanlike behavior will not be tolerated

  • Self-Officiated: Call your own infractions

    • For disputes, ask the bar employee—they have the final say

  • Score Reporting: Team captains must report match scores to the bar
